DRAKESVILLE. DOROTHY MAXINE COOK PICKRELL, age 83, originally from Drakesville, Iowa passed away on May 20, 2007 in the Evergreen Commons Nursing Home near her daughter’s home in Averill Park, New York. She was born on February 18, 1924 to Clarence E. and Dovie V. Eakins Cook. She married David Pickrell on April 16, 1943 in San Francisco, California where she worked welding ships while her husband served in the Navy during World War II. After they returned to Iowa they operated a grocery store and farmed. In 1959 they returned to the west coast spending 22 years working and living in various national parks including Death Valley, California, Glacier Bay, Alaska, Yosemite, California and Fort Clatsop, Oregon. In 1980 they retired back to Drakesville, Iowa providing summertime fun for their visiting granddaughters. Some of Dorothy’s many hobbies were quilting, sewing and crocheting.
Dorothy is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Sherry and Dan Dattilio of Averill Park, New York; 2 granddaughters Rachel Wheatley and Emily Dattilio; 3 sisters Evelyn Parcel of Drakesville, Iowa, Marjorie Smallwood of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Lucy Balcom of Frenchtown, Montana and a brother Charles Dean Cook.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.
The family will be at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield for visitation from 5:00-7:00 pm Friday, June 15, 2007. Graveside services and burial of cremains will be at 11:00 am Saturday June 16, 2007 in the Floris Cemetery in Floris, Iowa, with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating.
