BLOOMFIELD. DOYLE PRESTON SCHMITTER, 97 died in Bloomfield on January 28, 2008. He was born to Otto Wilhelm and Amy Morgan Schmitter of Rubio, Iowa, in 1911. He attended the local grade school and Richland High School, surrounded by a loving extended Morgan family. After one year at William Penn College, he graduated from Iowa State in 1934 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. He worked with the USDA from 1934 to 1974, thirty eight of those years with FM(H)A in Davis and surrounding counties. In 1948 he received a Superior Service Award from the largest loan program in Iowa. He loved the land, his work, and the many people he was able to assist through the agency.
In 1937 he married his high school sweetheart, Lucile Jones. Two years later, they moved to Bloomfield where they were active in the community: Lucile as a homemaker, club member, and teacher, and Doyle as a Rotarian, community theater actor, school board member, and avid tree planter. They are survived by two children, Hal Schmitter of Middlebury, Vermont, and Nancy Swope of Ottumwa, Iowa, and by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
After Lucile’s death in 1981, Doyle married Lois Davis Irvin. He quipped that he had the good fortune of marriage to the world’s two most wonderful women. He and Lois moved from Madison Street to Mulberry Place Retirement Apartments in 2003, where they were well cared for and where Lois continues to reside.
Memorial donations can be made to the Mutchler Community Center in Bloomfield , where Doyle spent many enjoyable hours exercising throughout his 80’s and well into his 90’s. Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield is assisting the family. |
