Jessie V. Meyers

BLOOMFIELD: Jessie Meyers passed away on July 27, 2009 in Lake Jackson, Texas. She was born Zofija Jasiukynaite in Pilviskiai, Lithuania 97 years ago, one of seven children. She came to the United States in 1922, entering at Ellis Island. She was raised in New Haven, Connecticut and received her nursing degree in 1930. She worked at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, where she met her husband, Paul Tabor Meyers, M. D. They were married in 1940.

Paul and Jessie lived near Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he served as a radiologist during World War II and then settled in North Carolina for a few years after the war. Later they moved to Bloomfield, Iowa, where they raised their children and Paul practiced radiology at the Gilfillan Clinic. After his retirement, they moved to the Houston area in 1978 to be near their children and grandchildren. They missed their many friends and neighbors in Bloomfield, but not the Iowa winters.

Jessie moved to Lake Jackson in 1984 and, after Paul passed away in 1985, again took up her favorite pastimes of playing bridge and gardening. She continued playing bridge and making friends when she moved to Carriage Inn Retirement Community in 1999, maintaining a fiercely independent lifestyle until her health declined recently.

Jessie is survived by her daughter, L. M. Fahr, M. D. and husband, J. D. Watson of Houston, TX; her son, Bruce P. Meyers, M.D. and wife Mary of Lake Jackson, TX; grandchildren John Fahr, Ph.D. and partner Ed Pesce of Washington, DC, Bruce Fahr, Ph.D. and wife Sharon of San Diego, CA, Lindsay Meyers of Nashville, TN and Elisabeth Yoder and husband Patrick of Houston. She was also immensely proud of her four great-grandsons.

A memorial service was held August 1, 2009 at Carriage Inn in Lake Jackson.  A graveside service will be held in Bloomfield, Iowa at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the IOOF Cemetery with Rev. Kevin Gingerich officiating. Local arrangements will be through Wagler Funeral Home. Memorials may be sent to the nursing scholarship fund of the Brazosport Health Foundation, P. O.
