BLOOMFIELD: Mary Lou Thomas, 80, of Unionville, Iowa died October 11, 2010 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. She was born June 3, 1930 in Davis County, Iowa to William Theophilus McKinley and Zelma Mae Smith Hopkins. She married Samuel A. Thomas June 8, 1948 in Lockridge, Iowa. He preceded her in death September 30, 2005. Mary attended the Drakesville United Methodist Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Centerville Chapter. She was also a member of the IBSU Club. She was a farmer and a resident of Davis County for most of her life.
She is survived by a son, Ronald (Mary Elizabeth) Thomas of Unionville, Iowa; two daughters, Barbara (Phil) Harrington, Sharon (Mark) Bolin both of Unionville; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Hopkins of Ottumwa, Iowa, George Hopkins of Unionville, Iowa; and six sisters, Miriam Hougland of Ottumwa, Iowa, Marlene Frich of Morgantown, West Virginia, Patricia Hubbartt of Arrayo Grande, California, Joyce Grosvenor of Moravia, Iowa, Lois Houser of Elkhart, Indiana, and Linda Holm of Humeston, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Robert and Stephen Hopkins; one sister Evelyn Scott; and three infant siblings.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, October 15, 2010 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin after 10 am on Thursday with the family present to greet friends from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials have been established to the Davis County Dollars for Scholars, the Mary Lou Thomas Scholarship for Moravia High School, and the Taylor Cemetery in Appanoose County, Iowa.
