Verlin Spurgeon

 

BLOOMFIELD:  Verlin Edwin Spurgeon, 82, of Greeley, Colorado and former resident of Davis County, Iowa died June 19, 2010 at the Colorado State Home for Veterans in Aurora, Colorado.  He was born April 25, 1928 in Davis County to Raymond and Delpha Spurgeon.  He married Christine Y. Fleming August 5, 1949 at the Christian Church Parsonage in Bloomfield.  Christine passed away on October 7, 2008 at the age of 77.  The couple lived in Bloomfield until September, 1960 when they moved to Arvada, Colorado.  In 1979, they moved to Ogallala, Nebraska and then moved to Greeley in 1983.  They owned and operated Triple S Rental in Greeley, retiring in 1996.  Verlin loved his dog, Mollie Sue.  He also enjoyed gardening roses, fixing and collecting clocks, woodworking, and piddling in the garage.  He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by a son, Kevin (Nancy) Spurgeon of Westminster, Co; a daughter, Koni (Dan) Williams of Wichita, Kansas; 4 grandchildren, Matthew Spurgeon and Krystal Spurgeon both of Northglenn, Co, Kandis (Keith) Gillaspie of Fruita, Co, Staci Christine Williams of Broomfield, Co; 3 sisters, Lois McCormick and Roma Spurgeon both of Ottumwa, Iowa, Beverly Gillaspie of Williamsburg, Iowa; 2 brothers, Ronald Spurgeon of Wilton, Iowa, James B. Spurgeon of New London, Iowa; 2 sister-in-laws, Delores Spurgeon and Patricia Spurgeon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Lowell Spurgeon; and a sister-in-law, Shari Spurgeon.

Graveside services for Verlin and Christine will be at 1:00pm on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield with Rev. James Wakelin officiating.  Military rites for Verlin will be performed by Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield.  Burial of cremains will follow the service.
