She was born October 19, 1924 in Centerville, Iowa to Virgil and Josephine (Stender) Brown. Shirley graduated from Davenport High School in 1942 where she excelled in music. She played violin, viola and bassoon and was also an outstanding soloist and performed in many venues with her sister, Betty.

She was united in marriage to W. Dale Hendricks October 30, 1942 in Stockton, California. After a few years as a military wife she and Dale moved to Troy, Iowa. Her husband, Dale, preceded her in death in 1983. She married Delbert Tarbell in March 1986 and he also preceded her in death in 2009.

After experiencing a serious illness, she moved to Davenport, Iowa and shortly thereafter fell and was moved to the Manor Care facility in Davenport where she lived until her death. She was fondly known as “Miss Blue” and “Bluebell” and was fond of telling everyone that her favorite color was blue. Shirley loved her family, music, flowers, baking, gardening and anything blue. On the dairy farm she could outwork most of the men in support of the cows.

The greatest legacy she left to her family is her gift for choosing to be happy through the good times and some very difficult and challenging times. She is and will continue to be very deeply missed.
