NEWTON: James Herbert Sawvel, 83, of Newton, Iowa died August 12, 2012 at Park Centre in Newton, Iowa. He was born February 9, 1929 in Mystic, Iowa to Lester V. and Mildred K. McCarty Sawvel. He graduated from Moravia High School in 1947 and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. James worked at Maytag in Newton.
He is survived by four sisters, Louise (JR) Hoyer of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Patricia England of San Diego, California, Mildred (Richard) Harris of Gladwin, Michigan, Janice Sheets of Iowa City, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Keith Sawvel; and a niece, Kimberly Stanley-Dias.
Graveside services with burial of the cremains will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville, Iowa with Pastor Jack Knox officiating. Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield will perform graveside military rites. No visitation is planned.
