Nick Van Horn
BLOOMFIELD: Nicholas J. “Nick” Van Horn, 62, of Bloomfield, Iowa died June 2, 2013 at the Continental Care Center in Seymour, Iowa. He was born April 4, 1951 in Bloomfield to Arlo DeWitt “Pete” and Hazel Kinnamon Van Horn. While growing up, Nick lived next to the Bloomfield City Park and pool. He attended a school in Bloomfield which his mother helped organize and also attended a school in Centerville, Iowa for a couple of years. In the mid-1960’s he began attending the Tenco Workshop at the airport/industrial park in Ottumwa, Iowa and continued after it moved to Gateway Drive. In the early 1980’s Nick moved to Ottumwa and lived in a group home. After a few years, Nick and his roommate, John Pedrick shared a house with Tenco staff. John remained his roommate for over 25 years until his death in 2009. Nick enjoyed working at Tenco and continued to work there until he became ill with meningitis in November 2010. He then moved to the Bloomfield Care Center. He later moved to the Continental Care Center in Seymour. He loved his family, friends, Indians, music, movies, and eating out. He was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church.
He is survived by a sister, Karen (Charles) Spargur of Bloomfield; brother, Jerry (Beth) Van Horn or Crete, Nebraska; three nephews; three nieces; several great-nieces-and-nephews; three aunts; several cousins; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Tommy Van Horn.
A celebration of Nick’s life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Jack Knox officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Open visitation will be from 1:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 10:00 a.m. on Thursday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to Camp Sunnyside in Davis County and to the Iowa Special Olympics and may be mailed to his sister, Karen Spargur at 407 N. Columbia, Bloomfield, Iowa 52537 or left at the funeral home.
