Gregory Comer

Gregory Comer, 73, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on October 26, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa. He was born in his parent’s home in Floris, Iowa on March 25, 1946. His parents were Sidney and Genevieve Whisler Comer. He graduated from Davis County High School in 1964 and served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Severn AO-61 as a machinist mate. He was discharged in 1969. Greg married Brenda Stonebraker in Bloomfield, Iowa on April 28, 1968. To this union, two sons were born; Casey and Jacob. He attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri. He was employed by Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg, Illinois, Wausau Homes in Ottumwa, and John Deere Ottumwa Works, where he retired from in 2002. Greg served many years as Chairman of the Deacon Board at the Floris Baptist Church and was honored by being named Deacon Emeritus when his health forced his retirement from serving. He and Brenda delivered Meals on Wheels for the Davis County Hospital for many years. He always had a good joke ready to tell and enjoyed playing golf in earlier years, as well as fishing and camping. Greg especially enjoyed family fishing vacations to Minnesota with the grandchildren and the hotly contested battle for the #1 Fisherman Trophy Cup. He was a wonderful husband, caring father, and doting grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Comer; two sons, Casey (Amanda) Comer of Palmyra, Missouri, Jacob Comer of Ottumwa, Iowa; two grandchildren, Andrew and Emily Comer; two brothers, Ronald (Sue) Comer, Melvin Comer both of Floris, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Bea Comer of Floris, Iowa, Linda (Kris) Johnston of Columbus Junction, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Harry Stonebraker of Sigourney, Iowa, Clarence Junior (Karen) Stonebraker of Bloomfield; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Clarence and Alta Stonebraker; grandparents, Ira and Anna Comer, Everett and Grace Whisler; two brothers, Max Comer, Ira Wayne Comer; brother-in-law, Melvin Stonebraker; and two sisters-in-law, Helen Stonebraker, Norma Stonebraker. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Brad Hansen officiating. Burial will be at the Pierce Cemetery in Davis County with military rites performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday with the family present to greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the Floris Fire Department.
