Charles Carter

Charles Edward Carter, 76, of Drakesville, Iowa passed away on March 5, 2023 at his home. He was born on December 5, 1946 in Burlington, Iowa to Henry E. and Lois Ilene McCullough Carter. Charles served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, retiring in 1986. He worked for Northrop-Grumman as an aerospace engineer in Southern California before relocating to Oklahoma City to work on the B2 Stealth Bomber program until the late 1990’s. During that time, Charles also owned an AAMCO Transmission shop in Oklahoma City. After moving to Davis County, Iowa he drove a school bus for several years for Davis County Schools. On April 5, 2003 Charles married Tammie Jones in West Grove, Iowa. Charles was proud of his service time in the Air Force and was proud of his country. He was a lifelong NASCAR fan and in his younger days, he even did some stock car racing. He was an avid and incredible mechanic and loved building hot rods, collectable cars, attending swap meets and auctions, as well as studying genealogy. Charles loved his family very deeply and was at his happiest when they all got together. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Tammie Carter; seven children, Jeremy Jones of Drakesville, Ticia Carter of Kirksville, Missouri, Thomas (Toni Ann) Carter of Los Angeles, California, Timothy Carter of Kirksville, April (Justin) Thomas of Centerville, Iowa, Jessica (Danny Jellison) Stalzer of Seymour, Iowa, Bobby (Sara) Wireman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Keely Carter, Corwin Thomas, Michael Thomas, Jeslyn Sindelar, Logan Wallace, Lillian Wireman, Brayden Wireman, Landon Stalzer, Maliki Wireman, Aedan Wallace, Dominick DeNoble Carter, Sabrina Thomas, Brenda Thomas and a granddaughter on the way; niece, Molly (Nick) Airhart; mother-in-law, Helen Slawson; father-in-law, Larry (Jane) Jones; three sisters-in-law, Shaylon Vestal, Darcie (Aaron) Moore, Kellie (Dave) Anderson; brother-in-law, John Schurman; uncle, Franklin McCullough; and two aunts, Cleo Hanssens, Glenice Roberts. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Karen Schurman; brother-in-law, Craig Vestal; and sister-in-law, Melissa Jones. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Roger Marlow officiating. Burial will be at the Hopkins Cemetery in Davis County with military rites performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to his family.
