Janice "Jan" Huggins

Janice Louise “Jan” Huggins, 89, of Atkins, Iowa, passed away on August 13, 2026, in her home after a brief illness. Jan was a loving soul who embraced life with kindness and compassion for all. She had a beautiful smile that was genuine and contagious. Her zest for life brought joy to those around her, and she was blessed with an enduring inner peace. If you spent more than a few minutes with Jan, undoubtedly your spirits were lifted. Additionally, you may well have heard her softly humming a happy tune. Family was the center of Jan’s universe. There was nothing more important to her than caring for and supporting loved ones. This is a core value that Jan and Bill, her loving husband for 64 years, instilled in their children and grandchildren. Jan’s unwavering support for her three sons and their families was immense and indisputable. She was a passionate and loyal fan, attending literally thousands of athletic competitions over the years. Jan used to joke – somewhat – that she married Bill because she wanted to have athletic children. Jan also loved encouraging her family as they expressed themselves through musical and artistic endeavors. A long-time auxiliary member of the VFW Post 788 in Cedar Rapids, Jan served as treasurer for the Auxiliary Board. She was actively involved in many activities. You could find Jan at the VFW Post on multiple days, any given week. She embraced most opportunities to serve and socialize there. Yet, without question, the regular Karaoke night was her favorite activity. Born on March 8, 1937, to Forest and Hazel Rudd in rural Davis County, Iowa, Jan graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1955. She married her high school sweetheart, Bill Huggins, in 1957. Jan is survived by her three sons, Steve, Craig (Joan), and Jeff (Catherine); four grandchildren, Nick (Jenny), Zach, Anna, and Luke; a step-granddaughter; three step-great-grandchildren; a step great-great-grandson; three sisters, Judy (Jim) Matheney, Donna Jean (Don) Treharne, and Joy Iacono; several in-law siblings, Ron Huggins, Harold Huggins, Oma Munn, Gary Joe and Pam Huggins, Max and Tonya Huggins, Sue Huggins, and Deb Huggins; and dozens of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Hazel Bailey Rudd; in-laws, Floyd and Golda Huggins; daughter in-law, Cate Huggins; in-law siblings: Eugene “Smoke” and Marlene Huggins, Dwight and Jacquie Huggins, Jim and Marietta Huggins, Pat Huggins, Betty Huggins, Jim Munn, Tom Huggins, Stan Huggins, and Rose and Rusty Grinstead. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Jon Klaus officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. The funeral will be live streamed on the Wagler Funeral Home Facebook page. Immediately following the interment, the family will be hosting a luncheon for loved ones and friends. Visitation for Jan will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at the Wagler Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to VFW Post 788 in Cedar Rapids.
