Kevin Spurgeon

Kevin Dru Spurgeon, 69, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on February 18, 2023 at his home due to renal and bone cancer. He was born on August 31, 1953 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Jewell Smith Spurgeon and Beverly Ann Crouse Spurgeon. He lived in rural Bloomfield his entire life. He graduated from Davis County High School in 1972. On July 21, 1974 he married Roberta Swafford in Bloomfield. They enjoyed 48 wonderful years of marriage. Kevin farmed with his father and brother, Greg. He purchased Speer Electronics from Bill and Kay Speer and moved the business to the west side of the square. He expanded the business to include satellite, antenna, and cell phone service, a full line of Whirlpool appliances and later Radio Shack. His business included retail sales and service. Kevin operated the business until 2006. In 1995, he started another business, Access Storage, in Ottumwa and has continued to operate that business. Kevin and Roberta had two children, Amy Caldwell of Ottumwa and Clint (Missi) Spurgeon of Indianola, Iowa. They have four grandchildren, Dru and Joey Spurgeon, Jewel and Josey Caldwell. Kevin was known for his talent in fixing any equipment, vehicle, or item that was broken. As his granddaughter Jewel says, “My poppy can fix anything.” Kevin enjoyed golfing and traveling with Roberta. He particularly enjoyed restoring his classic 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix muscle car and his 1949 Harley Davidson. Kevin and Roberta enjoyed going to many car shows and National Pontiac Conventions as well as cycling through the Rocky and Smoky Mountains. They were fortunate to go on numerous cruises and to many resorts in warm climates. Kevin is survived by his wife, Roberta; mother, Beverly Spurgeon; sister, Debbie (Gary) Horn; brother, Greg (Tracy) Spurgeon; son, Clint (Missi) Spurgeon; daughter, Amy Caldwell; four grandchildren; and sister-and-brother-in-law, Kathy and Terry Davis of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Donna Olinger officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Hospice of Wapello and Davis Counties.
