Mike Hootman

Michael “Mike” Jacob Hootman, 73, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa peacefully passed away on May 13, 2025 at home after a battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He was born on July 28, 1951 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Junior Jacob and Lucille Hewitt Hootman. Mike graduated from Davis County High School in 1969. On February 9, 1974 he married Coleen Elizabeth Burdett in Stiles, Iowa. The couple enjoyed 51 wonderful years of marriage together. Mike worked various farm jobs until starting employment at John Morrell in Ottumwa, working there until the plant closed. He then started employment at John Deere Ottumwa Works in 1974, retiring in 2005 after 31 years. He was a member of the UAW Local 74. After John Deere, Mike began farming full time. Mike enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and anything else to do with being outdoors. He loved going trail riding, rodeos, camping, and being with his grandsons. He also liked to watch western shows and rodeo on television. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Mike is survived by his wife, Coleen; son, Eric (Natasha) Hootman of Bloomfield; and three grandsons, Lane Hunter Boyd, Jacob Wade Hootman, Paul Doran Hootman. He was preceded in death by his son, Wade Michael Hootman. Also surviving are five siblings, Craig (Nancy) Hootman of Ottumwa, Lance Hootman, Twyla Hootman, Melanie Hootman all of Floris, Iowa, Sandra Keller of Fairfield, Iowa; brother-in-law, Tom Engel; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Linda Engel; in-laws, Paul and Pauline Burdett; and two brothers-in-law, Doran Burdett and Mike Keller. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Jeff Cummings officiating. Burial will be at the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests that casual attire be worn for the funeral and visitation because Mike would have wanted it that way. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the family and will be designated at a later date.
