Shawn Armstrong

Shawn David Armstrong, 54, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on July 5, 2023 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born on June 6, 1969 in Bloomfield, Iowa to David Harlan and Linda Diane Roberts Armstrong. He grew up mostly around Kirksville, Missouri and graduated from Kirksville High School in 1988. Shawn graduated with an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Indian Hills in Ottumwa and later with a bachelor’s degree from Buena Vista. On June 12, 1993 he married Dana Marie Tucker in Albia, Iowa. The couple lived in Bloomfield and raised three sons; Tucker, Trent, and Trey. Shawn joined the Bloomfield Police Department in 1999 and was promoted to Police Chief on May 5, 2005. He loved being a police officer and his fellow officers were like a second family to him. He retired from the department in April 2023 due to health issues. Shawn had many hobbies over the years including; golfing, reading, bee keeping, painting miniatures, playing Dungeons and Dragons, gardening, watching Star Trek and Star Wars, rooting for the Kansas City Royals, going to the library to hang with the crew there, and spending time with his beloved dogs, Laverne and Shirley. Shawn recently became a hockey fan and liked watching the Iowa Wild and the Iowa Heartlanders. Above all, Shawn was a family man and loved spending time with his wife and three sons. Shawn and Dana spent many happy times attending their sons’ school and athletic events. He was a proud father and will always be remembered and loved. Shawn was a member of International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Child Safety Council and Ottumwa Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M. He is survived by his wife, Dana Armstrong; three sons, Tucker (Elizabeth Gray) Armstrong of Des Moines, Iowa, Trent Armstrong of Coralville, Iowa, Trey Armstrong of Bloomfield; parents, David and Linda Armstrong of Oskaloosa, Iowa; brother, Brett (Whitney) Armstrong of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandmother, Betty Roberts of Bloomfield; father-in-law, Dallas Tucker of Albia, Iowa; sister-in-law, Debbie (Steve) Thomas of Albia, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, Doug (Lou) Tucker of Georgia, David (Lisa) Tucker of Kentucky; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harlan and Evelyn Armstrong; grandfather, Marvin Roberts; and mother-in-law, Sharon Tucker. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Thom Bryant officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation for the public will begin at noon on Monday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday followed by a visitation with the family present to greet friends until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the Friends of the Bloomfield Public Library and the Heartland Humane Society in Ottumwa.
