DRAKESVILLE: Tommy Dean “Tom” Warner, 71, of Drakesville, Iowa died September 8, 2013 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born January 29, 1942 near Blakesburg, Iowa to Stan and Gwen Nelson Warner. He married Cathy Hardy September 5, 1964 in Bloomfield. He graduated from Blakesburg High School in 1960. Tom served with the third light anti-aircraft missile battalion during Vietnam as a corporal for the United States Marines. He retired from John Deere Ottumwa Works after 30 years. He continued working at Dr. Pepper/7up Bottlers thereafter. Tom was affiliated with the Drakesville United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Drakesville community and was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a member of Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, UAW, and Vietnam Veterans Ottumwa Chapter 667. He was very hard-working and enjoyed working with his hands and fixing things. He always had a project of some sort in the works. He enjoyed painting, singing, farming, working with his animals, metal detecting, black powder shooting, coins, geology, and local history. He was also a master float-builder and avid gardener. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Cathy; two daughters, Susie (Jay Schisel) of Bonaparte, Iowa, Angie Walker of Friend, Nebraska; two sons, Joe and Matt Warner both of Chicago, Illinois; three grandchildren, Reegan, Tanner, and Dakota Walker all of Friend, Nebraska; a sister, Judy Amery of Denver, Colorado; and two brothers, Jerry Warner of Ottumwa and Butch Warner of Jacksonville, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sandra Woofter. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 13, 2013 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. John D. Boatman officiating. Burial with graveside military rites performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion will be at the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville. Visitation will begin after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Drakesville City Park Log Cabin Preservation Fund and Vietnam Veterans Chapter 667.
