Lynn Shumate

Lynnatte Elaine Shumate, 72, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on February 7, 2024 at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She was born on April 28, 1951, in Ottumwa, Iowa to William and Virginia Westoff Hinkel. She attended Ottumwa High School and graduated in 1969. After high school, she enrolled in the nursing program at Indian Hills Community College. She graduated in 1971 with her RN, as a member of the first graduating class of the program. She later went on to receive her BSN from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1998. On November 13, 1971, she married Rodney Shumate in Bloomfield. The couple resided on a farm in Davis County and raised their three children. Lynn worked as a nurse serving her community in many different roles. Working as an office nurse at a few local medical offices, as a bedside nurse at Davis County Hospital, as a home health nurse at Davis County Home Health, and ending her career as a school nurse at Davis County Community Schools. Her role as school nurse was her favorite as she loved taking care of the students. She had a big impact on many kids as many years after retiring, she continued to receive graduation announcements and cards from her favorites. Along with her nursing roles, Lynn was also an active member of Chapter Q TTT, the Retired School Personnel group, and the Davis County School Foundation. She loved volunteering and was always willing to help anyone out. She enjoyed being part of the local book club and spending time with friends and family. Lynn is survived by her husband, Rodney; children, Jeff (Cindy) Shumate of Mt. Zion, Illinois, Joel Shumate of Bloomfield, Holly (Justin) Newberry of Danville, Iowa; six grandchildren, Logan, MacKenzie, and Peyton Shumate, Delaney, Dylan, and Darby Newberry; brother, Gary Hinkel of Centerville, Iowa; sister, Lori (Jim) Irwin of Tampa, Florida; sister-in-law, Sharry (Mike) Humphrey of Bloomfield; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Virginia Hinkel; brother, Terry Hinkel; and in-laws, Burton and Betty Shumate. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Tim Sprouse officiating. Burial will be at the Pulaski Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2024 with the family present to greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the Davis County Dollars for Scholars and Chapter Q TTT.
