William "Bill" Gibson

William “Bill” Norris Gibson was born December 3, 1931 to Clarence and Bertha Nelson Gibson. His parents passed away when he was young and Bill became family to Claude and Lila Dixon. Bill worked various jobs as a young man including working at John Morrell in Ottumwa, where he met and married Marjorie Joann Noe on August 29, 1952. Shortly after marriage, he joined the Army during the Korean War where he was stationed at Kunsan K-8 Air Base near Gunsan, South Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1954. After returning to Iowa, Bill went back to work at John Morrell and also farmed, raising crops, sheep and cattle. Through the years, Bill also bought lambs from local farmers for Chiappetti Packing Plant in Chicago, and owned a Supersweet Feeds store in West Grove with Joann, where he was often a top dealer. Joann passed away on June 18, 2008. Bill loved his country, community, the West Grove United Methodist Church, and especially his family. Due to a lingering illness, Bill resided at the Bloomfield Care Center, where all staff took exceptional care of him. On October 15, 2017, with family bedside, Bill entered peacefully into God’s hands. He is survived by three children, Kimball Gibson of Lincoln City, Oregon, Russell (Sandra) Gibson of New Bloomfield, Missouri, Tammera (James Belmudez) Gibson of Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Lauren Gibson, Jesse (Kris) Gibson both of Fresno, California, Jill (Isaiah) Harmon of Ashland, Missouri; great-granddaughter, Ellie Harmon; and a sister, Edith Bingamin of Ottumwa, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 55 years, Marjorie Joann Gibson; and siblings Vera, Marvin, and Bessie. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Tom Shipley officiating. Burial with military rites performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion will be at the West Grove Cemetery in West Grove, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the Bloomfield Care Center Activity Fund and Care Initiatives Hospice.
